Collaboration deal to develop a Sono-Coat™ Microwave Ablation Needle
- Encapson signed a collaboration agreement with an undisclosed Med Tech firm, a leading company in the field of tumor ablation. To increase the ultrasound visibility of their MicroWave Ablation needle, Encapson will apply its echogenic Sono-Coat™ technology to easily identify the active area of the MWA probe and modify the coating to withstand ablation temperatures of up to + 250⁰C
- Microwave ablation is the fastest growing tumor ablation technique, providing strong competition to Radio Frequency Ablation. The advantages are a faster and more consistent heating, shorter duration of procedural time, reduced hospital stay and an excellent clinical outcome
- The Global Microwave Ablation Devices market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 14,8% in the coming 5 years. The shift towards minimally invasive interventions and the use of ultrasound will further boost the market
- The key objective of this collaboration is to have a highly ultrasound visible Sono-Coat™ MW Ablation probe on the market in 2020

Encapson has developed Sono-Coat™; an innovative echogenic coating system to improve the ultrasound visibility of medical devices in the body. The Sono-Coat™ technology is based on a coating matrix containing acoustically reflective microspheres. The microspheres scatter the ultrasound waves in all directions.
